Riverside Relaxation is a pet-free property. We're sharing this guide because we get asked constantly — and because the information circulating on most travel sites is outdated or just wrong. If you're traveling with a dog, this guide will save you from a ticket and help you find the spots that actually work.
Marco Island is not particularly dog-friendly compared to other Florida beach towns. The primary public beaches — Crescent Beach, South Marco Beach, Tigertail Beach — prohibit dogs entirely during daytime hours (typically 8am–6pm). Enforcement varies, but fines are real and rangers do patrol during peak season. We've watched guests get cited.
What's actually allowed: dogs on leashes on the beach before 8am and after 6pm. Dogs on sidewalks and public roads throughout the island. Dogs in Veterans Community Park and certain green spaces. And dogs on Keewaydin Island — the boat-access-only barrier island — which has no posted restrictions and is entirely worth the effort if your dog loves remote beaches.
The mainland just north of Marco — specifically the stretch of Route 951 toward Naples — has a few dog parks within 20 minutes of the island if you need an off-leash option. But they're not on Marco itself.
If your dog is a beach dog and you're flexible on schedule, this is genuinely magical. The beach before 8am on Marco Island is nearly deserted, the light is extraordinary, and the water is calm. Tigertail Beach before dawn during shelling season (winter) is one of those experiences that makes the whole trip. Arrive early, stay until 7:45am, and pack it up before rangers arrive. Don't push it.
The Hemingway Water Shuttle runs 7 trips daily from Rose Marina (0.4 miles from Riverside Relaxation, 20 minutes from most Marco Island hotels). Keewaydin is a pristine, undeveloped barrier island with no posted restrictions on dogs as of our last visit. The beach is wild, the shelling is exceptional, and on a weekday you may be almost completely alone. This is a legitimately special experience with or without a dog — with one it's even better.
The island's main public park on Collier Boulevard has green space, paved paths, and is genuinely dog-friendly. Not a beach experience, but a good mid-day option when beach access is restricted. There are shade trees and the park is well-maintained.
The Olde Marco neighborhood where Riverside Relaxation is located is walkable, quiet, and has sidewalks along the waterfront. Walking a dog through here in the early morning or evening — along the Marco River, past the marinas, toward Snook Inn — is a genuinely pleasant experience. The neighborhood is dog-tolerant in the way that residential areas often are where the main strip is not.
Dogs are allowed on leash in this 7,000-acre wilderness park just up the Tamiami Trail. The nature trails through mangroves and pinelands are shaded, well-maintained, and rarely crowded. If your dog needs proper exercise and nature rather than beach access, this is the best option near Marco Island.
The selection of genuinely pet-friendly vacation rentals on Marco Island is limited. Many properties that appear in search results as "pet-friendly" are either in condo buildings with restrictive HOA pet rules, on upper floors with no elevator, or in locations that make the practical logistics of having a dog difficult.
When searching, filter specifically for pet-allowed properties and then check: Is it ground floor or does it have an elevator? Is there green space within walking distance? What's the pet fee and deposit? Are there breed or weight restrictions? Read reviews specifically from guests who traveled with dogs — they'll tell you what the listing won't.
Marco Island has fewer pet-friendly options than destinations like St. Pete Beach or Cape Cod, so flexibility on dates helps — you're fishing in a smaller pool and booking well in advance is essential for the January–April season.
We love dogs. We also have guests with severe pet allergies, and we've made a commitment to keeping the condo in a condition that guests with allergies can enjoy without worry. HOA rules at Riverside Club reinforce this. We're not able to make exceptions.
For guests traveling without dogs, this means an immaculately clean property that's never had a pet in it. For guests with dogs, we genuinely wish we could accommodate you — but we'd rather be honest than surprise you at check-in.
